Customer Notification

Any customer who owns his or her natural gas facilities from the point of origin to which the City of Lexington Natural Gas Department supplies natural gas is responsible from that point to the dwelling, business, or any other structure for the maintenance of said customer facilities include physical facilities, but not exclusive of, piping, anodes, wires, regulators, and meters from the outlet of the city's meter, where ever located, to a dwelling, business, barn, or other structure on the property.

The City of Lexington Natural Gas Department normally is responsible for the natural gas pipeline up to the meter, physically located at the building or structure. The piping and any apparatus physically attached to the outlet side of the meter is the responsibility of the natural gas customer at all times. By law, these facilities must be maintained under the provisions set forth.

Any person using natural gas is responsible to check with the City of Lexington Natural Gas Department to determine if their lines are maintained by the gas operator or themselves. If buried natural gas piping and other natural gas facilities are NOT maintained properly the following is susceptible to happening:
1. The metal gas line may be susceptible to the potential hazards of corrosion and leakage.
2. The plastic gas line may be susceptible to a broken tracer wire and the potential of a line being punctured.

A: Periodically inspected for leaks.
B: Periodically inspected for corrosion if the piping is metallic; and
C: Repaired if any unsafe condition is discovered.
4. When excavating near buried gas piping, the piping should be located in advance and the excavation done by hand.
5. The operator, plumbing contractors, and heating contractors can assist in locating, inspecting, and repairing the customer's buried piping.

Each operator shall notify each customer no later than ninety (90) days after the customer first receives natural gas at a particular destination. However, operators of "Master Meter" systems, such as housing authorities, may continuously post a general notice in prominent location frequented by customers.
