Historic Preservation Commission
On February 14, 2005, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 05-22 to establish the Lexington Historic Preservation Commission. According to the laws of the State of North Carolina, the Lexington Historic Preservation Commission is established so that City Council can "safeguard the heritage of the City by preserving any district or landmark herein that embodies important elements of its culture, history, architectural history or prehistory" and "promote the use and conservation of such district or landmark for the education, pleasure and enrichment of the residents of the City and the State as a whole." The Commission is comprised of five at-large members appointed by the Mayor and City Council. Each member is eligible to serve two consecutive three-year terms. At least three of the Commission members must have demonstrated special interest, experience and/or education in history, architecture, archaeology or related fields. Commission meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month at 4:00 p.m. in the Vernon G. Price, Jr., Council Chambers at City Hall, 28 West Center Street, Lexington, NC 27292. Members of the public may address the Historic Preservation Commission on items not listed on the agenda. The minutes of each Commission meeting will be posted for each month after they have been approved at the following meeting. Anyone who needs an accommodation to participate in the meeting should notify the Community Development Department at 336-248-3900 at least 48 hours prior to the meeting or call North Carolina Relay at 800-735-8262.
