The Engineering Department operates to protect the City of Lexington's interest in both new development and the operation and maintenance of existing city infrastructure. The mission is to provide engineering, technical and contract management assistance to all city departments.
It is the Engineering department's responsibility to schedule, design, prepare specifications, acquire permits and secure right-of-ways; as well as advertise, bid and manage various capital improvement projects as directed and approved by the City Council and the City Manager.

Additional engineering responsibilities include plan review, water and wastewater project consulting, management of the City’s geographical information system (GIS mapping), obtain and hold applicable permits and encroachment agreements, and monitor the construction of new public infrastructure to ensure compliance with local, state and federal regulations. Staff also assists various partners, developers and businesses by pricing, approving and scheduling all new water and wastewater connections.
