The City of Lexington has six City Council seats elected to represent citizens living in those Voting Wards. Voting Wards are distinct geographical sections of the City designed to be represented by a member of City Council residing in that Voting Ward. Two of those Council Voting Ward seats (Ward 1 and Ward 5) have a majority of African American residents. In addition, two Council Member seats are elected at-large and the Mayor’s seat is elected at-large for a total of nine (9) members on the Lexington City Council. All candidates for Mayor and City Council seats must be residents of the City. Candidates for Voting Ward seats 1 through 6 must reside in the Voting Ward seat they wish to represent.
