LEXINGTON NC TAKES NEXT STEP TOWARD REDEVELOPMENT OF DEPOT DISTRICT 
- City Council adopts resolution to sell vacant Candy Factory via bid process -

Lexington, NC, March, 23, 2017 – On March 13, the Lexington City Council adopted a resolution declaring the City’s intent to sell vacant property in the Depot District. This measure supports the City’s long-term strategy to redevelop the former Lexington Home Brands manufacturing center into a vibrant mixed-use district anchored by a passenger rail stop. The measure is a result of interest expressed by several developers in obtaining one or more of the buildings located within the district. 

The initial property for sale includes a connected group of vacant buildings known as the former North Carolina Candy Factory building, bound by the newly completed Breeden Insurance Amphitheater, East Third Avenue, South Railroad Street, and East Fourth Avenue. The amphitheater features a state-of-the-art stage officially inaugurated at the Depot District Music Fest April 8, 2017. 

“Because these buildings are directly adjacent to the amphitheater, they are uniquely suited for restaurant, retail, entertainment or other uses complementary to the new venue,” said Lexington Mayor Newell Clark. “As an added opportunity, the amphitheater stage is designed to serve both the larger seating area out front, as well as a potential courtyard to the rear associated with the subject buildings. This resolution furthers the City’s goal of developing the Depot District into a mixed-used redevelopment that will serve the City well into the future.” 

The City of Lexington has zoned the property as a Planned Development District, meaning any redevelopment plans are subject to review and approval by City Council in order to ensure that any planned use and adaptation is consistent with the community’s vision for the Depot District.

In order to maintain a fair and transparent process and to protect the public interest, the building(s) will be sold through the upset bid process in accordance with NCGS 160-269 with a development agreement.
