SUMMARY
Performs responsible protective service work regulating vehicle and foot traffic in conjunction with the moving of children to and from school; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Police Department

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Education equivalent to high school graduation;
• Some knowledge of customer service techniques especially when dealing with angry or discourteous people;
• Ability to attend work regularly;
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• General knowledge of traffic regulations;
• Ability and willingness to work in inclement weather throughout the year;
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
• Ability to deal courteously and firmly with children, vehicle operators, school personnel and citizens;
• Basic traffic safety practices;

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Regulates vehicular traffic at designated crossing to allow children to cross safely;
• Regulates children using the crossing to assure that they conform to traffic regulations;
• Assists bus drivers, parents, vehicle operators, police and school staff to ensure a safe and orderly school ingress and egress process;
• Reports traffic violations to Police Department;
• Regulates traffic at special events and non-school locations as assigned;
• Performs miscellaneous duties to assist with special events and other school functions and events;
• Takes appropriate action with children who fail to cooperate and reports such action as required;
• Reports to work on assigned duty schedule;
• Performs related tasks as required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, and atmospheric conditions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The employee may be subject to adverse environmental conditions including inclement weather and very hot or very cold temperatures. Includes exposure to noise levels which at times may be distracting or uncomfortable. At times the worker may be subject to hazards associated with working in proximity to moving traffic.  Includes conflict situations and may require dealing with unpleasant, angry or discourteous people. Some mental effort is involved which could result in inconvenience and frustration.
