Crime Stoppers
On January 20, 1983, a program was initiated through the Lexington Police Department in an effort to catch more criminals and help reduce crime. This new program is called the Lexington Area CRIME STOPPERS.
CRIME STOPPERS is a program designed to solve felony crime and serious misdemeanors, and involve the community in doing so by asking the public to provide funding for a reward fund to purchase leads and information that may assist in solving such crimes.
You, as citizens, benefit from this program. CRIME STOPPERS has proven successful in solving numerous crimes and has resulted in the recovery of thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise.
CRIME STOPPERS does not receive any funding from state or federal sources. It is a community project totally supported by donations from citizens and businesses. Signs, 24" by 18", were bought by businesses top display on their property infoming criminals that they are a supporter of CRIME STOPPERS. Other donations have come from individuals and from a CRIME STOPPERS Softball Tournament.
The first call received on the CRIME STOPPERS line was on January 25, 1983. Information received on this call resulted in the recovery of a 1982 Cadillac stolen from Greensboro and valued at $20,000.00. A Davidson County man was caught, tried, and convicted of this offense. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined $100,000.00.
Since then CRIME STOPPERS has helped in the arrest of approximately 230 people and cleared approximately 150 major cases. It has also helped in the recovery and seizure of over $700,000.00 in stolen merchandise and illegal drugs.
If you want to become involved in the CRIME STOPPERS, you can by either makng a donation or supply information about a crime. Citizens with information about a crime can call 243-2400. All calls in kept in complete confidence and you do not need to give your name or address. Citizens supplying information leading to the arrest and indictment of anyone committing a felony or serious misdemeanor crime or fugitive from justice, are eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.00.
